YouTube Is Changing Its Monetization Rules: Everything You Need to Know
YouTube just dropped some huge news about how creators make money on the platform. If you have a YouTube channel or want to start one, these changes are super important to know about.
YouTube is updating the rules for its YouTube Partner Program (YPP). This is the official program that lets creators earn money from ads shown on their videos.
Here is a super simple breakdown of what is changing, what is staying the same, and what it means for your channel!
What Is the Big Update?
YouTube is growing faster than ever. Every single day, people watch over 200 billion Shorts views and spend over one billion hours watching YouTube on their TV screens.
Because the platform is getting so big, YouTube decided to double the requirements needed to start earning ad money on your channel.
Old Rules vs. New Rules for Ad Money
To join the YouTube Partner Program and get paid from ads, new creators now have to hit higher targets.
The New Requirements (Higher Goals)
To get monetized, you will now need:
- 8,000 Watch Hours on your regular long videos in the last 12 months, OR
- 20 Million Views on your YouTube Shorts in the last 90 days.
The Old Requirements (What it used to be)
Before this update, creators only needed:
- 4,000 Watch Hours in the last 12 months, OR
- 10 Million Shorts Views in the last 90 days.
As you can see, YouTube literally doubled the goals for both watch hours and Shorts views!
What Is NOT Changing?
Don't worry, some things are staying exactly the same!
1. Subscriber Goal (1,000 Subscribers)
You still need 1,000 subscribers to get monetized. YouTube confirmed there is no time limit on this. It doesn't matter if it takes you a few months or a couple of years to reach 1,000 subscribers; your progress will never reset!
2. Fan Funding (Super Chats & Memberships)
YouTube has a smaller tier for fan funding like Super Chats, Channel Memberships, and Shopping. The rules for this early tier have not changed at all.
You can still unlock fan funding as soon as you get:
- 500 Subscribers
- 3,000 Watch Hours (or 3 Million Shorts Views)
- 3 Video Uploads in the last 90 days
What Happens to Channels That Are Already Monetized?
If your channel is already in the YouTube Partner Program and making money today, you are totally safe!
YouTube is not kicking existing monetized channels out. You do not need to suddenly get 8,000 watch hours to stay monetized for regular long videos.
The New Rule for Shorts Monetization
However, there is one new rule for Shorts creators who are already monetized:
- If a channel inside YPP gets less than 10 million Shorts views over a 90-day period, they will temporarily stop earning ad money on their Shorts.
- Their regular long-form videos will not be affected.
- Once the channel gets back above 10 million Shorts views, the money from Shorts ads turns back on automatically!
YouTube Premium Lite Is Expanding
YouTube also shared some good news: a feature called YouTube Premium Lite is expanding to more countries around the world.
Premium Lite is a cheaper monthly subscription for viewers who want to watch videos without ads. When more viewers sign up for Premium Lite, creators in YPP get a share of that subscription money. This means creators will have extra ways to earn income!
When Do These New Rules Start?
You do not need to panic right away!
YouTube stated that these new 8,000-hour and 20-million-view rules will not start until February 1st, 2027.
That means every creator still gets a 6-month buffer period to reach the old targets (4,000 watch hours or 10 million Shorts views). If you manage to get your channel monetized before February 1st, 2027, you will lock in your monetization status under the easier old rules!

- Push hard before February 2027: Try your best to hit 4,000 watch hours before the new rules officially drop so you get locked in early.
- Make engaging long videos: Focus on making interesting videos that keep viewers watching for a long time. High watch time is the fastest way to hit your goals.
- Use Fan Funding: Aim for 500 subscribers and 3,000 watch hours first so you can start earning money from memberships and Super Chats while you build up to the higher target.
- Stay consistent: Keep uploading content on a clear schedule so your audience keeps coming back!
