Shimlipal was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO on May 28, 2008.
It is home to large tigers, deer and other species of animals. The name Shimilipal comes from the dense forest of the red silk.(simuli-ଶିମୁଳି). The sanctuary covers an area of 45.60 sq km. These include the Joranda and Barehipani waterfalls (ଜୋରନ୍ଦା ଓ ବରେହିପାଣି ଜଳପ୍ରପାତ). Similipal  has 99 giant tigers and 432 wild elephants. There is also the Indian Bisonଗୟଳ, the Chushinga deer ଚଉଶିଙ୍ଗା ହରିଣin Shimlipal, and an orchidarium. The Budharabalangaବୁଢ଼ାବଳଙ୍ଗ, Gangaharଗଙ୍ଗାହାର, Son(ସୋନ), Deo(ଦେଓ), Sanj( ସଞ୍ଜ), Khairi(ଖଇରୀ) and Handan(ହଣ୍ଡନ) rivers flow through the narrow valleys of the mountains. Of the 128 types of orchids found in Odisha, only 98 are found in Shimlipal. Of the 128 types of orchids found in Odisha, only 4 are found in Simlipal. The sanctuary is home to 1,015 species of plants, 17 species of mammals (46 species of mammals(ସ୍ତନ୍ୟପାୟୀ ପ୍ରାଣୀ),  29 species of reptiles (ସରୀସୃପ), 12 species of amphibians(ଉଭୟଚର) and 62 species of birds. Numerous species of herbivores and carnivores can be found here such as : Tigers, Panthers(Panthera pardus-Kalarapatria Tigers), Wild Cats, Wild Dogs, Wolves, Elephants, Eagles, Sambar, Kutura, Deer, Gurandi Baraha, Indian pangolin (Manis crassicaudata-Bajrakapta), Hedgehog(jhinka), Tortoise, Python(Ajagara sapa) and Crocodile(Magar)

Sitakunda (ସୀତାକୁଣ୍ଡ): 

Located at the foot of Shimlipal National Park, Sitakunda's main waterfall is about 2,500 feet high in the Kalipahar Hills (କାଳୀପାହାଡ଼). It is believed that Marambura, a deity worshipped in the Mayurbhanj district(ମୟୂରଭଞ୍ଜ ଜିଲ୍ଲା ଆଦିବାସୀଙ୍କ ଆରାଧ୍ୟ ଦେବତା ମାରାଂବୁରା ), lives in the Kalipahad.

 Krishnamukha Hanuman Temple (କୃଷ୍ଣମୁଖା ହନୁମାନ ମନ୍ଦିର): This legendary stone cave temple is worshipped by the black-faced Hanuman who returned from burning Lanka.
-Machhakandana Water Falls(ମାଛକାନ୍ଦଣା ଜଳପ୍ରପାତ): The beauty of Shimlipal is a total of 3 waterfalls. There is a stone cave near the first waterfall. The second waterfall occurs in the late afternoon (when the sun is in the west). Since the third waterfall is not visible from above, it has to go down to see it.
