Story Behind Kumara Purnami

Kumar Purnima is celebrated on the occasion of the northward journey of Sun God. Kumar or Kartika, the handsome son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati was born on this auspicious full-moon day. It is the most popular autumn festival (in the month of October or November) celebrated by Kumaris (unmarried girls) in the Odisha State. All girls wish for a handsome husband like Kartika who was the most handsome among all Hindu Gods. On this day Makara Chaula is offered to the God as prasadam and throw that in the near by pond or river and after that they search for snails, oysters shells or piece of bamboo stick and throw it to the roof of their own house singing the songs "Danta kathi mo Bhai heu suna kathi, Genda mo Bhai heu bhenda.. "whcih means "Oh God make my brother strong and a golden stick.."
